Humboldt's Restructuring Plan is Proceeding

As you know, we’ll be a different school next year.  We’re moving forward with an environmental studies and college/career prep focus for next school year with grades seven through twelve housed within the current high school facility with an enrollment of between 750-850 students.

Though you may not notice this, we’ve already started the process.  Humboldt Senior High School is currently closed to new students; does that mean no one can enroll?  No.  It means all incoming students must be approved by me prior to being allowed to enroll.  I’m not sure if you know this, but we have a highly “mobile” student body.  For instance, when we pull the data from last year, about half of the students that started in September, 2007 were different students than those in June, 2008.  Not because they we’re smarter, but rather different bodies.  By closing our enrollment to new students, we are stabilizing our population.

This past December, we presented a plan which we are moving forward with.  Part of that plan was to develop a planning team composed of existing teachers to create the “big picture” for the new school.  Mr. Williams (Humboldt Junior High Principal) and I met with district staff and consultants to begin this process.  Humboldt Junior and Senior High School teachers are going to be removed from the classroom in the coming weeks to begin planning.  This will result in some changes in our current teaching staff.  Some teachers will be removed from the classroom to work on the planning.

This is the first real impact of our changes you may feel.  You may have a different teacher in the coming weeks.  Though this is a change, this was planned.  The original plan presented in December, states we’ll be seeking funding to hire staff to begin the planning process.  The district has secured funding to begin implementing our plan. We are moving Humboldt Senior High School forward from good to great!  I appreciate your support!
