Spring has Sprung!

We are planting the seeds of our future, in our students and as we evolve as a school.  Our seniors will be graduating on June 1st at 8:00 PM at Aldrich Arena.  After graduation all seniors are invited to come to the all night party at Humboldt to say their good byes and celebrate as a class.  They are harvesting the seeds of their years of schooling while planting seed for their future.

Humboldt will be a different school next year.  We recognize we need to provide closure for our seniors and for staff which will not be returning next year.  On Friday May 29th we’re having our senior farewell assembly in which our seniors will have an opportunity to say good bye to the staff.  Due to our restructuring, several staff will not be returning to Humboldt next year, therefore we’re going to give all Humboldt students in grade 7-12 an opportunity to say good bye.  This has been a tearful ceremony when it has been just the seniors, but since we’re expanding it to give all students a chance to say farewell, please talk to your daughter or son about how our changes are impacting their well-being.

In response to student, staff and community input, we are going to have the following themes across the curriculum next year:

1st Quarter:  The River

2nd Quarter:  Energy/Transportation

3rd Quarter:  Ecosystems/Biomes

4th Quarter:  Gardens/Agriculture

We will be planning for hands-on activities to extend the learning beyond the classroom.  In addition to the changes within the classroom, we’re also making changes to the building and grounds so Humboldt better reflects our focus.  Some proposed changes include: removing the pillar at the front of the building and planting gardens, installing two large aquariums in the cafeteria, painting murals which reflect our focus, and technology upgrades (such as media production and robotics lab) to prepare our students for careers of the future.  These are ideas which are part of our “grand” plan.  I cannot guarantee all of these will be implemented, but I can guarantee that we will not be the same Humboldt!

We are in a time of transition.  Please talk to your daughter or son about their future plans and ours.  High school is a time in which our kids evolve into young adults.  Conversations about short term and long term goals help us focus on our future.  Whether you’re a senior graduating and determining a major in college or a freshman who is registering for sophomore classes, talking with a parent or guardian about your thoughts will provide insight.

If you would like to chat with me about our changes, please give me a call or catch me at conferences on Thursday May 7th from 4:00-7:00 PM.
